The Song That Confirmed It

Monday morning, just before the sun began to peek through the half opened blinds, I awoke with tears streaming down my face. I had experienced an intense joy that no one could rob me of, not today, not ever. It manifested itself in a dream as many of my life lessons often do.

I sit in an old fashioned wooden pew perhaps three or four rows away from a pulpit covered in brilliant scarlet colored carpet. A faceless woman makes her way down the center aisle and begins to belt out a tune which was more than familiar to me. It is one of several songs that only my great-grandmother, Earlene, would dare sing, as if they were written solely for her. As the woman delivers every word, every note effortlessly, I’m reminded of the times I would hear my granny sing “I don’t feel no ways tired” over a boiling hot pot of hominy grits and sizzling pork sausage.

As the sound engulfs my body and lifts me up, I realize this soulful tune is yet another expression of love and encouragement, a simple message from the woman who helped raise me to become an incredible man and believe that all things are possible if I never gave up, despite any obstacles that might come my way. I cry tears of joy and confirmation, flooding me with certainty that I am fulfilling my purpose using the God given talent deep inside me. And it’s all because of her. She’s the reason why I aspire to transcend mediocrity. She’s the reason why I choose to inspire. She’s the reason why I sing today.

(Singing)
“I don’t feel no ways tired,
I’ve come too far from where I started from.
Nobody told me that the road would be easy,
I don’t believe He brought me this far to leave me.”- James Cleveland

My Musical Inspiration

I pull inspiration from several of my favorite artists like John Legend, Sinatra, George Michael and Coldplay. I hope my soulful flavor mixed with touches of jazz and rock is creating a refreshing sound that is sure to reach the masses. I admittedly dream of performing with John Legend and collaborating with the legends Burt Bacharach and Quincy Jones.
